Creating a Balance Between Beauty and Sustainability

In the beauty industry, particularly wedding beauty, there really is a lack of awareness on excessiveness - excess products, excess packaging, and unfortunately, excess product waste. At Aeternum Artistry, I have made it my mission to challenge this common practice. As a proud partner with Green Circle Salons I am proving daily that sustainability and luxury beauty aren't mutually exclusive – they can be even better when done together.

The Unfortunate Reality of Wedding Waste

Most couples are shocked when they learn that on average each wedding produces approximately 400 to 600 pounds of waste. While decor, food, and attire contribute significantly to this number, the beauty industry plays a big part too. From single-use makeup applicators to product packaging, and aerosol cans, traditional beauty services can leave behind a substantial environmental footprint.

When I founded Aeternum Artistry, I knew I wanted my approach to be different.

My Sustainable Wedding Beauty Practices

Thoughtful Product Selection

My commitment to sustainability begins with what I choose to stock in my kits :

  • I prioritize brands with a commitment to the environment (Like Davines)

  • I invest in premuim products with higher pigment concentration (meaning less product used per application)

  • I am always searching for multi-use products that serve multiple functions

One client favorite is our collection of cream products that work for lips, cheeks, and eyes – providing versatility while reducing the number of products needed for a complete look.

Mindful Application Techniques

  • I use reusable metal spatulas and implements that can be thoroughly sanitized between clients

  • When disposable applicators are necessary (like mascara wands), I collect them for recycling

  • I precisely measure product amounts to minimize excess

The Green Circle Salons Partnership

The cornerstone of my sustainability commitment is the partnership with Green Circle Salons, which allows me to:

  • Recycle traditionally non-recyclable items like aerosol cans and broken hot irons

  • Properly dispose of single-use items

  • Repurpose plastic packaging that conventional recycling programs reject

  • Track and measure our waste diversion to continue improving

Through this program, things like mascara wands, cotton rounds, and sponges that would usually end up in landfills get to be recycled and given a new life.

Real Results: Our Sustainability Impact

In 2024 through my Green Circle Salons practices, I was able to :

  • Divert over 48 pounds of beauty waste from getting tossed in landfills

  • Reduced my single-use plastic consumption by approximately 20%

  • Our single use items were recycled into approximately 2kWh of clean energy

  • Decreased our product waste by implementing precise measuring systems

But the numbers don't tell the whole story. The real impact comes from changing perspectives and mindsets with our clients around the significant impact being environmentally aware can have.

The Client Experience: Luxury Meets Responsibility

Many people assume sustainable beauty means compromising luxury or quality. You will quickly discover this couldn't be further from the truth:

The Wedding Day Experience

  • My carefully curated kit contains only what's needed, creating a clean, organized space

  • All reusable tools are professionally sanitized and a safe alternative to disposables

  • My focus on product efficiency means less time spent on touch-ups and more time enjoying your day

  • Peace of mind knowing that your beauty choices also align with your values

The Challenges and Wins of Sustainability

Embracing sustainability in beauty hasn't been without challenges:

  • Finding sustainable alternatives for every product category requires extensive research and sometimes has restraints

  • Some sustainable alternatives are a more costly investment than their counter parts

  • Continuously improving my practices demands ongoing education and vigilance

But to be honest the rewards have far outweighed these challenges. I have been able to build a business that aligns with my values while delivering exceptional beauty services. I've connected with like-minded clients who appreciate my commitment to the planet, and I have been able to prove that luxury and sustainability can coexist beautifully.
