Do you need extensions for your wedding hairstyle?

The short answer to this is…probably? 🫣😅 In all seriousness though, a lot of the styles that are popular right now (we’re looking at you glam waves..) require A LOT of hair. Most of those models that you see online that are rocking glam waves, big twisted half updos, or even that beautiful midi/high bun, are all wearing extensions to achieve that look.

However, if the importance is placed on comfort and wearability of the style versus the look of it, you may want to opt for versions of the style that don’t require the high maintenance of the hair extensions. AND, if you have a talented hairstylist (ahem 💁🏼‍♀️) there are ways to get around the perceived necessity of adding extensions to your wedding day hairstyles. We have a few tricks up our sleeves to give the illusion of volume without actually needing extra hair to work with!

There are always going to be exceptions to the rule, and circumstances where the rules stands for a reason. Here’s what we mean by that: if you have average to below average density hair already extensions may just be a requirement for most celebrant and bridal hairstyles, and if you already have pretty thicc hair you might be able to chill with the hair that you have. Let’s try a little exercise to get a rough estimation of the density of your hair:

  • grab up all of your hair as if you were going to put it into a pony tail

  • with one hand wrapped in a fist to hold your hair, use the other hands thumb and index finger to create a circle around the pony tail right behind your other hand

  • if the diameter of that circle is similar to the diameter of a quarter or less….you might need extensions

  • if the diameter of that circle is similar to the diameter of a quarter or bigger, you might not need them!

No, this isn’t going to be fool-proof, but it will give you a good idea of what your natural hair is capable of! If you are hoping to get around the need to have extensions, but don’t have a ton of hair, here are some styles that would be good for you:

A chic half up/half down or side swept style is always great for someone who doesn’t have a ton of hair! Buns can also always be padded to add the illusions of volume if you’re lacking. So, there are definitely options on your side if decide that you would like to opt-out of adding the extensions
